color studies and ink

Doing some quick 1 hour or so master copies of great still-life painters. The first is Golucho; the 2nd, Israel Hershberg. originals first!

Golucho

Hershberg

Now I'm realizing my colors are way over-saturated in both cases (though the photo strengthened them even more so); both painters are masters of strong, subtle color. I need to work on that!

Experimental self portrait; at the time I was looking at Sophie Jodoin and Ruprecht Von Kaufmann for inspiration.

Christmas Eve

I happen to know that I am receiving a hefty pile of incredible art books for Christmas this year, along with some great art supplies I've been wanting for a while...Should be great! Can't wait to crack em open and see how full I can pack my bookshelf once I return to my dorm at Ringling. Merry Christmas to you all!

In the meantime, here's an illustration I'm working on and a few drawings I hadn't uploaded due to a lack of a good camera. The portraits were 10 minutes each; and the last is of my Drawing teacher, Richard Tuschman. Check out his work by clicking on his name in the list to your right ----->

Small update

Some sketchbook pages from the past month or two; some master studies, some life drawing, and some media experimentation. I have other things to upload, but I just need to find a better way to get them onto the computer in quality. Portraits to come~

Need to update more...

....or just wait til I can dump a bunch at once!

Just pencil, inks, etc. I've been looking at Jillian Tamaki's stuff a lot recently: http://www.jilliantamaki.com/

Couple of quick master copies in here; Noel Sickles, Fechin, etc
The 8th image was a drawing fom an old photograph heavily inspired by Noel Sickle's drawings: http://illustrationart.blogspot.com/2010/08/comic-con-2010-conclusion.html
The self-portrait was done while looking at Jillian Tamaki's ink portraits; she has such an economy of line, and I crapped up by trying to put too much detail in mine. Lesson learned...

Inktober! and sketches

Me and Philip Whisenhunt over at http://civilmouse.blogspot.com/ are participating in Inktober: http://agent44.com/blog2/?p=502

And so are many others! Join us if you'd like. It's simply an ink drawing a day for all of October. I need a good excuse to brush up (no pun intended) on my ink chops. These sketchbook pages are studies from 2 James Montgomery Flagg inks and one of his figure paintings. Here's a good page on Flagg with examples of his incredible talent: http://www.americanartarchives.com/flagg.htm

And me with 2 of the books Ive recently checked out from Ringling's Kimbrough Library. If only I could own them...

The Flagg book is an absolute must have. A great biography and hundreds of high res details of inks, watercolors, oils, charcoals, and much more. The other is a book on John Singer Sargent; the biography is great so far. Without further ado, here are my first pieces for Inktober (among other things)! Thanks Flagg!
