color studies and ink

Doing some quick 1 hour or so master copies of great still-life painters. The first is Golucho; the 2nd, Israel Hershberg. originals first!

Golucho

Hershberg

Now I'm realizing my colors are way over-saturated in both cases (though the photo strengthened them even more so); both painters are masters of strong, subtle color. I need to work on that!

 And some ink sketches---

practice!

Lopez Garcia

Antonio Lopez Garcia, born 1936.

These drawings and paintings are in chronological order. The first was completed in 1950, when the artist was 13 years old. The 2nd, 1959- the artist was 22. The 3rd, 1960 - 23.

It's alright; we're not so blessed. But we'll work with what we have.

Josefina, 1950

Beach, 1959

Carmencita Playing, 1960

Table, 1971-1980

Ismael Fuentes

Just found a painter based in Madrid by the name of Ismael Fuentes, check out his work! : http://www.ismaelfuentes.com/

Lots of incredible figurative stuff, great textures; something about those Spanish guys, man! Garcia, Golucho, Fuentes...

Keep looking at great art---

oil stuff

the first is an oil painting on canvas, 24"x30"
the second is an oil rub technique taught to us by our media teacher Don Brandes, some fun stuff, except I used the wrong surface; watercolor board instead of illustration board. Too rough and texturey. John Coltrane flamed up! gonna finish it up this weekend

We were to illustrate a song in Matteo Caloiaro's class. I chose Kid For Today by Boards of Canada: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM2ZIWUJVGs

Here's the piece:

Look up "James Jean .psds" and youll find some awesome stuff. He released some process documents some time back and theyre still available online; I was heavily influenced by his digital work when working on this piece. I definitely learned a lot from it-
